Abstract

Today's article is about the mystery of increase of size of nucleons and the two competing theories on how the protons and neutrons behave inside nucleus. From the nuclear shell models, since 1940, we know that nucleons move inside the nucleus in certain orbital, analogous to how electrons fill up the shells outside the nucleus and moves. Like the different shells have capacity for different number of electrons , different shells have different "magic numbers" for the less binding energy of proton and neutrons separately. As the orbitals of proton and neutrons are independent of each other, protons may be present in magic number, while neutrons may not be or vice versa. Or, it may happen that both protons and neutrons are present in magic number, such a shell is called doubly magic. An atomic nucleus can remain in a configuration such that one orbital has acquired double magic number and in the next orbital there is only one, lonely proton or neutron. Scientists' concern is how would it react to different interaction.
