Abstract

This article is about the general principle used by a refrigerator.

 

While a heat engine absorbs heat from a source at a higher temperature, converts a part of it into work and rejects the rest to the sink at lower temperature, the refrigerator takes in heat at lower temperature, an amount of work is done upon it and it rejects heat at the higher temperature. A refrigerator may thus be looked upon as a heat engine operating in reverse.
