Abstract

Today's article is about amazing celestial bodies, comets. They have been the subject of fascination, fear and superstition for centuries, considered as a bad omen. But they are nothing but cosmic body consisting of ice. Known number of comets are 3743 till date. Comets are made of ice, frozen gases and dust and rocks. These constitute the nucleus of the comet. These components are the leftovers after the creation of our solar system. They generally have elliptical orbit or orbits of high eccentricity around the sun. When it approaches sun, the heat of the sun makes ices turn to vapour (the phenomenon is called outgassing) and forms the atmosphere of the comet, also called coma. Most of the times, radiation pressure from sun and strong solar wind pushes the coma away from the sun, forming a glowing tail that can cover fwe hundred thousand miles.
