This article is about the Linear resonance accelerator or linear accelerator which is a device that accelerates charged particles along a straight line, developed by Alvarez and his co-workers.
The basic principle of a linear accelerator is to increase the velocity of charged particles in successive steps along a straight line when they are subjected repeatedly to accelerating electric field. The particles in a linear accelerator are energized by a series of linear pulses and radio frequencies, that is, by extra pushes at the right moments of time, i.e. correct phase.
